TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is recognised by over 8,500 universities and other academic institutions worldwide. It is designed to identify those students who can excel in an English-speaking academic environment.
The aim of this course is to familiarise participants with the structure of the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test), and to provide them with all the necessary skills to do well in the exam.
Placement Test and Estimated Extent of the Preparation
Before the course begins, all participants are required to take the Oxford Placement Test to assess their level of English. Depending on the level obtained in the test, we will discuss the expected number of classes necessary to pass the test. The instructor will use the results of the test to plan the teaching and meet the needs of the participants.
The course will address the four sections of the TOEFL iBT exam: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. We will examine the structure of each section and the types of questions contained within them, so that the participants acquire the necessary skills to master each section. Participants will have the opportunity to complete exercises and practice tests during the course. We will also discuss relevant supporting skills, including exam time management, and address grammatical and lexical issues as they arise.
Participants will be invited to submit two essays – designed to prepare them for the two separate writing tasks in the exam – on which they will receive personal feedback from the instructor.
Number of participants
We recommend a maximum of 6 participants per class, but if you prefer to be the only student it is also a possibility. Being the sole participant will give you more flexibility as to the number of classes, when and where they are to take place.
